A Kent firm has been fined thousands for trying to illegally export dirty waste including nappies, condoms, sanitary towels, and cotton buds.

P&D Material Recovery attempted to send 11 containers filled with banned waste into Turkey. Some of the items included condoms, sanitary towels, cotton buds, glass, and textiles including old underwear during March 2019.

The combined weight of the shipments equaled around 220 tonnes, all of which were meant to be sent to a waste facility in Turkey.

The company was fined £13,000 for the event which was discovered during a routine inspection. They agreed that the waste was inappropriate for export and it was then sent for incineration.

The company went on to say they would employ extra staff for improving their quality checking by adding an additional picking station.

Environmental Agency was also paid £11,000 from the company as compensation for the investigation.

The main investigator from the EA said “We want all producers and waste companies to be responsible and make sure they only export material that can be legally and safely sent abroad for recycling.”

We always want to make sure that all waste is taken to the appropriate facility and disposed of in the most eco-friendly way. Find your skip hire prices on our site now, book online, and receive your skip the next day for no extra cost.
